3 1/2 inch ribbon, red with silver star in middle; 2 piece pewter pin top half bears multiple images with symbolic meaning and the skyline of Chicago with a red plaque "Alternate"; the lower half is suspended by chains from the top half. The second half contains an image of the U.S. Capitol Building between two American flags with "1940 Democratic National Convention" written below.
