Item — Box: 28, Folder: 15
Identifier: CAC_CC_109_5_28_15_0014
A provision was attached to the Appropriations Bill, HR 7356, after the House had passed the bill without such a provision, that eliminated health care benefits for non-Indian spouses.
-The Conference Committee, negotiating the difference in the House and Senate measures, decided to keep the non-Indian health care elimination provision.
-The provision affects the more needy among the Indian people, and non-Indian spouses will only be eligible for health benefits in cases of pregnancy and public health emergencies.
-Originally, three other areas of the Indian Health Services budget were also scheduled for funding elimination under President Reagan's proposed Budget request last spring, but they received funding for Fiscal Year 1983.
-The Indian community has taken a lot of bruises in the budget area over the last two years, but because of united support, they have bravely made it through and look forward to a brighter future.
