The Indian Child Welfare Act of 1977 was enacted to establish standards for the placement of Indian children in foster or adoptive homes, to prevent the breakup of Indian families, and to promote the stability and security of Indian families. The Act requires that Indian children be placed in homes that reflect the unique values of Indian culture and that tribal authorities be consulted in all child placement decisions. Additionally, the Act authorizes the establishment of family development programs and centers to help prevent the need for foster or adoptive placements.
