The Potawatomi Tribe, BIA, and the Federal Savings and Loan Insurance Corporation
Item — Box: 38, Folder: 22
Identifier: CAC_CC_109_5_38_22_0002
The Potawatomi Tribe is negotiating with the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) about whether they can manage money in their own trust account. Meanwhile, the BIA is trying to recover $860,000 it invested in a defunct savings and loan association in Chicago. The bureau claims each court award was a separate investment, with a limit of $100,000 each. However, the federal insurance corporation considers the total investment a single unit, with only $100,000 insured. If the insurance corporation does not cover the loss, then the BIA hopes to have "first position" among the Economy's creditors. Potawatomi officials are trying to gain control of about $21 million in trust funds held by the bureau.
