Cherokee Riverbed Case
Item — Box: 38, Folder: 16
Identifier: CAC_CC_109_5_38_16_0016
The appropriations subcommittee has agreed to defer the Cherokee riverbed case without prejudice, along with the Rhodes Udall case. The full committee will not take the bill up until after reconvening from the 4th of July recess. Byron says yates and Ginn were only ones to push the Cherokee position in subcommittee; questions were raised by dicks and Duncan general feeling was subcommittee was already way over the budget, and that this (the Cherokee case) was an expensive item that the case should go through the courts like other claims, rather than being negotiated between the bureau and the tribe (the depts solicitor still maintains there is no legal obligation to pay the tribe); concern expressed that the Chickasaws or other tribes would come in and want similar compensation. Byron doubts James will even bring matter up in full committee; says our chances will be greatly improved if Bellmon puts in on senate side possible chance in supplemental. 6/18 Mob letter is the culprit.
