The department of the interior is responsible for managing oil and gas leases on tribal and allotted Indian lands. In response to a inquiry from Mrs. J. Clyde Harris, the department explains that the $1.75 Per acre bid by terra resources inc. Was for the right to lease the land for drilling and production, not for the sale of the land itself. The lease is generally for a period of 5 or 10 years, after which it may be renewed if oil and gas has been found and produced on the land. The United State's Geological survey advises Indian mineral owners of the potential value of their land for oil and gas production, and makes recommendations on whether to accept or reject high bids.
