The Disposition Of The Potawatomi Judgment Funds

 Item — Box: 38, Folder: 19
Identifier: CAC_CC_109_5_38_19_0008
The text discusses the status of the disposition of the judgment funds awarded to the Potawatomi nation of Indians. The funds are to be shared among four modern day tribal groups and a descendant group composed of Indiana/Michigan Potawatomi lineal descendants. The bureau of Indian affairs is recommending that the judgment funds be shared among these groups. However, tribal officials have been unable to actively consider and develop their judgment use proposals in a timely fashion. The publicity on the citizen band proposal appearing in the tribal newsletter of September 8, 1981, and in the notice of the bureau of Indian affairs about the December 5 hearing of record, prompted many inquiries, similar to the one received by you. Unfortunately, some of the information and sequence of events reported in the tribal newsletter surrounding the development of the tribal proposal, in our view, leaves the impression that the delays are attributable to actions and demands of bureau officials.
