The Claremore Indian Hospital Controversy
Item — Box: 38, Folder: 24
Identifier: CAC_CC_109_5_38_24_0005
The Claremore Indian hospital controversy began when a proposal consisting of twelve complaints or allegations was drawn up by dr. Constance uri and associates and signed by Mr. John w. Davis, area director of the oklahoma city Indian health service. The grievance committee, task force, and executive committee were formed to investigate the complaints and make recommendations.
Complainants consisted mainly of Indian staff nurses, who accused hospital administrators and supervisors of imposing unreasonable requirements on employees, denying them privileges, and engaging in unethical practices such as removing organs from deceased patients bodies.
The committees recommended that the hospital offer training to all personnel, especially in the nursing staff, to help them better understand Indian history, culture, and values. They also recommended that field trips to all tribal areas served by the Claremore service unit be initiated.
