The Acting Commissioner of the Administration for Native Americans provides an overview of the agency's budget for FY 1984. The agency's goal is to promote self-sufficiency for Native Americans through locally-determined strategies for social and economic development. The agency implemented a competitive review process for awarding grants for development projects. The evaluation of the agency's grants found that they have had successes in establishing commercial enterprises, improving natural resource development, and putting people to work in non-subsidized employment. A new initiative is planned to improve coordination of Indian activities at the federal level and promote Indian self-determination. Funding for financial assistance grants for federally recognized tribes will remain constant, and there are plans to provide direct funding for child welfare services and propose legislation to make Indian tribes eligible for direct funding under the Social Services Block Grant.
