Senate Rejects Bellmon's Amendment to Alter Voting Rights Act, 1975-01

 Item — Box: DP 132, Folder: 2
Identifier: CAC_CC_001_4_132_2_0012
Senator Henry Bellmon's amendment to exempt counties with dominant English language of Indians from bilingual elections under the Voting Rights Act was rejected by the Senate. Bellmon argued that the act falsely assumed American Indians automatically have a dominant language other than English. Without the amendment, certain counties in Oklahoma would be required to hold bilingual elections despite not necessarily needing them.
