Choctaw Council Petitions for Popular Ballot in 1952, 1952-01-01 - 1952-12-31

 Item — Box: 13, Folder: 74
Identifier: CAC_CC_001_4_13_74_0011
The Pittsburg County Choctaw Council is petitioning the US government to allow the Choctaws to choose their next chief by popular vote, rather than by political appointment. They argue that this is more democratic and in line with what the Choctaws want. However, if the government decides to appoint the chief instead, the Council asks that only someone of Choctaw blood who resides within the Old Choctaw Nation be chosen, in order to ensure that the chief understands the Choctaws' problems. The Council also requests that the Choctaws be given more autonomy after 1956, when restrictions on their self-governance are set to expire.
