The Native American Legal Defense and Education Fund (Native American Legal Defense and Education Fund (NALDEF)) was founded in 1970 to help protect the legal rights of Native Americans and provide educational programs to help them understand their rights and obligations. Native American Legal Defense and Education Fund (NALDEF) has four main goals: to monitor the activities of the Federal government to make sure Indian interests are protected; to provide legal assistance to Native Americans at the local level; to litigate or help others litigate important legal issues affecting all Native Americans; and to provide competent, effective legal assistance to Native Americans at the local level. AIO is sponsoring a seminar on Indian Claims to bring together representatives of tribes with claims pending before the commission, members of the commission, legislative persons who draft Congressional appropriations, and investment experts. The seminar will provide an opportunity for tribal representatives to more fully understand the claims process and to discuss their problems with each other and with experts.
