The All American Indian Days and Miss (Indian) America Pageant began in 1952 as a way to improve relations between Indians and non-Indians. The pageant is open to any North American Indian woman between the ages of 17 and 26. Contestants are judged on their scholastic achievement, integrity, and dedication to their tribe. The winner of the pageant is recognized as an outstanding example of American Indian womanhood.
