The letter responds to a request for clarification on the Absentee Shawnee Tribe's authority to exercise law enforcement powers and be eligible for LEAA grants. After reviewing relevant laws and precedent, it is concluded that the tribe does possess law enforcement authorities and may be certified for LEAA purposes. The constitution of the tribe allows for jurisdiction on restricted lands held for its members. The Assistant Secretary is advised that there are no legal impediments to the tribe exercising law enforcement jurisdiction.
