Despite protests and allegations of election irregularities, a swimmer has taken over as the new chief of the Cherokee tribe. The inauguration ceremony included the dedication of a memorial to past tribal leaders and the selection of Miss Cherokee. The new chief emphasized unity and pride among the Cherokee people, despite facing criticism and protests. Former chief Keeler was made an ambassador of goodwill for the tribe. Thompson, the U.S. Indian Commissioner, was shouted down by protesters during his speech. The new chief expressed confidence in his leadership and the future of the Cherokee tribe.
