Opposition to Bill Regarding Judgement Funds for Creek Indians of Oklahoma, 1972-06-24
Item — Box: 30, Folder: 28
Identifier: CAC_CC_003_2_30_28_0036
Allen Harjo and other Creek Indians are opposed to a bill introduced by Senator Dewey Bartlett that would allow judgement funds awarded to the Creek Indians of Oklahoma to be controlled by the Creek Chief and approved by the Secretary of the Interior. They believe the Creek Chief does not always act in the best interests of the tribe. They are requesting that the funds be managed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs until the tribe adopts a constitution, and that decisions regarding the funds be contingent upon the tribe adopting a constitution. They are urging Senator Bartlett and other Senators not to pass the bill in its current form.
