Harjo vs. Cox: Runoff for Creek Chief, 1975-01-01 - 1975-12-31

 Item — Box: 30, Folder: 29
Identifier: CAC_CC_003_2_30_29_0014
Tulsa accountant Allen Harjo collected almost one-third of the ballots cast in the Creek Indian Nation election, forcing a runoff with incumbent Chief Claude Cox. Harjo disagrees with Cox on the proposed tribal constitution and spending of tribal funds. The runoff is scheduled for September 6. Harjo wants the Creeks to form a National Council composed of representatives from old tribal towns, while Cox supports a constitution with a legislature based on the American system. Harjo also opposes using land claim dispute judgments to pay off tribal debt, while Cox wants to use the money for that purpose.
