Creek Indian Chief Claude Cox barely survived a primary election to determine the new principal chief of the Creek Nation, with Tulsa accountant Allen Harjo outpolling him but not getting a majority of votes. A runoff between Cox and Harjo will be held on September 6, with Cox being almost knocked out of the runoff by a close third-place finisher, Keeper Johnson. The election had a turnout of 3,298 out of 4,200 registered Creek voters.
