Response Regarding Payment for Sale of Coal Lands to Choctaw and Chickasaw Tribes, 1949-08-18

 Item — Box: 6, Folder: 74
Identifier: CAC_CC_001_4_6_74_0007
Mr. William Lewis wrote to Congressman Carl Albert inquiring about the payment he is supposed to receive for the sale of coal lands by the Choctaw and Chickasaw Tribes to the government. Congressman Albert responded, informing Lewis that checks have been mailed out by the Five Civilized Tribes Agency and advised him to contact the Agency for an application form to receive his share of the money. Albert also mentioned that the Department is not withholding the money due to tax reasons, as the decision on whether it will be taxable has not been finalized. Lewis requested further information on the status of his payment and if it will be subject to income tax.
