Public Law 85-568, also known as the National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958, was enacted to promote research in flight within and outside the earth's atmosphere for peaceful purposes. It established the National Aeronautics and Space Council to coordinate aeronautical and space activities, with members from various government departments and agencies, as well as private individuals with expertise in relevant fields. The act aimed to advance human knowledge, improve vehicle performance, develop space exploration capabilities, and ensure the United States' leadership in aeronautical and space science and technology.
