In 1969, there were 178,476 Indian students enrolled in public, Federal, private, and mission schools in the United States. The Bureau of Indian Affairs operated 223 schools with an enrollment of 52,471 Indian children. The primary objective of these schools is to prepare Indian children for successful living by providing basic academic skills, vocational training, and education for higher learning. States have assumed responsibility for the education of over half of school-age Indian children, with some financial assistance provided by Federal programs like Public Law 874 and the Johnson-O'Malley Act.
