The letter is from Senator Fred R. Harris to Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Scruggs, enclosing a reply received from the Department of the Interior regarding their inquiry about obtaining an Indian grant for their daughter, Karla Scruggs, to attend college. The Department of the Interior states that Miss Scruggs is 11/64 Choctaw and lacks sufficient Indian blood quantum to be eligible for Bureau services. They suggest resubmitting the application with definite information on her Cherokee lineage for further consideration. Senator Harris assures the Scruggs that he will be in touch with additional information as soon as he receives it. The Scruggs express their disappointment with the delay in processing their application and request assistance from Senator Harris in obtaining the grant.
