Shirley Sweat wrote to Senator Fred R. Harris asking for help in establishing her Cherokee Indian background to determine her eligibility for government aid for college scholarships. Senator Harris forwarded her letter to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, who responded that she needs to establish her relationship to the Cherokee Nation and prove she has at least one-fourth degree Indian blood to be eligible for assistance. The Bureau suggested contacting the National Archives for more information and provided pamphlets on scholarships for American Indian youth.
