Title: Inquiry on Loans for Higher Education Programs for Indians, 1971-10-19

 File — Box: 266, Folder: 23
Identifier: CAC_CC_026_1_266_23_004
Senator Fred Harris received a letter from Billie Masters requesting information about loans for higher education programs for Indians. Senator Harris contacted the Bureau of Indian Affairs to gather information and provide a response to Ms. Masters. The Bureau explained that under certain circumstances, the Federal Government will pay part of the interest charge for the Guaranteed Loan Program. They also mentioned that there are no provisions for cancellation of any part of Guaranteed Loans. The Bureau's Higher Education Program provides financial aid and supportive services to eligible Indian students attending college. They noted that no allowance is made for the repayment of past indebtedness due to limited resources. Based on Ms. Masters' employment as a teacher at the advanced degree level, it was suggested that her salary should permit at least the minimum required repayment of about a dollar a day. Senator Harris assured Ms. Masters that he will be in touch with her again once he receives a report from the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
