 Item — Box: 59, Folder: 17
Identifier: CAC_CC_109_7_59_17_0017
The Oklahoma Indian Affairs Commission has passed a resolution recognizing the importance of judicial recognition of Indian country in Oklahoma. They urge the United States Attorney for the Western District of Oklahoma to assume his law enforcement role in Indian country, request Oklahoma's Congressional delegation to take no action affecting the jurisdictional status of Indian country, and pledge support to preserve Indian country and ensure adequate law enforcement protection for its inhabitants. Several tribes are working to establish law and order codes and tribal courts to handle offenses in Indian country, with the Bureau of Indian Affairs creating a Court of Indian Offenses and hiring police officers. The United States Attorney has started prosecuting felonies in Indian country, and full assumption of law enforcement responsibilities by the federal government and tribes is expected to increase protection for all residents.
