Mrs. David M. Hartshorne sent a petition to Congressman Carl Albert requesting the immediate appointment of Harry J.W. Belvin as Principal Chief of the Choctaw Tribe. The petition was in response to an election held on June 21, 1948, where Belvin received more than one-third of the votes. The Indian Office confirmed Belvin's appointment for a four-year term starting on August 18, 1948. The letter acknowledges the petition and informs that the Superintendent of the Five Civilized Tribes Agency has been notified of the appointment.
