The Indian Health Service, a component of the Health Services Administration, works to provide comprehensive health services to American Indians and Alaska Natives. The program includes preventive, curative, and rehabilitative services through a network of hospitals, health centers, and clinics. Contract care is used to supplement services when necessary. The IHS addresses issues such as otitis media, mental health, nutrition, dental health, and maternal and child health to improve the health status of the population. The program also focuses on providing culturally-sensitive care and opportunities for Indian management of health programs.
