The letter is a response to Senator Bartlett's inquiry regarding the use of funds under Public Law 81-874 for Indian education in Carnegie Public Schools. The Department of Health, Education, and Welfare states that there is no requirement for school districts with restricted Indian lands to solely use these funds for Indian education. Federal regulations require certain assurances from school districts with Indian pupils, but these assurances do not mandate new programs for Indian children.
