Supporting Enactment of Indian Legislation: A Letter from Governor Overton James, 1973-07-05

 Item — Box: 33, Folder: 10
Identifier: CAC_CC_003_2_33_10_0019
The Governor of the Chickasaw Nation expresses support for legislation proposed by the President regarding Indian matters, but raises concerns about a specific proposal authorizing the Secretary of Interior to contract the administration of the Johnson-O'Malley Program with Indian tribes. The Governor believes that in Oklahoma, where there are many tribes and schools participating in the program, competition and jealousy among tribes could arise and public school administrators may be hesitant to accept tribal educational programs.
