Addressing the Housing Crisis: Testimony of Ronald Froman, Chairman of the National American Indian Housing Council, 1974-06-30

 Item — Box: 33, Folder: 8
Identifier: CAC_CC_003_2_33_8_0014
Ronald Froman, Chairman of the National American Indian Housing Council, testified before the Senate on the dire housing situation for American Indians. Despite efforts in the 1960s, housing conditions have not improved due to population growth, deteriorating housing, and lack of funding from HUD. The Housing and Community Development Act of 1974 included a set-aside for Indian housing, but only a fraction of the required units have been contracted due to delays in processing paperwork and accounts receivable issues. Froman criticized HUD for blaming processing delays on legal issues and Indian authorities, and called for legislation to address the unique trust relationship for Indian housing needs.
