A proposed bill, S. 1017, aimed at promoting maximum Indian participation in government and education, providing for the full participation of Indian tribes in federal programs, establishing a national Indian education program, encouraging local Indian school control, and training professionals in Indian education. The proposed amendments include provisions for contracts between the Secretary and states, tribal organizations, and school districts for the education of Indian students, as well as reimbursement for educating students from tribes not residing in the state, and the establishment of local committees to participate in program development.
