Update on S. 1017: The Indian Self-Determination and Educational Reform Act, 1974-03-08

 Item — Box: 33, Folder: 14
Identifier: CAC_CC_003_2_33_14_0017
Senator Jackson, Chairman of the Interior & Insular Affairs Committee, provided an update on the status of S. 1017, the Indian Self-Determination and Educational Reform Act. The bill was sent back to the Committee for further consideration due to concerns raised about Part A of Title II. Efforts were made to draft amendments to address these concerns, including one that would allocate funds for special programs for Indian pupils. The amendment also proposed an increase in funding and the establishment of local committees for Indian parents. The Committee was asked to consider different alternatives, including retaining the original language, adopting the proposed amendment, or striking Part A after consulting with tribal leaders.
