The Ramah Navajo School Board has not yet recontacted with the Bureau of Indian Affairs for school operation funds, citing concerns about the new policy of vesting authority in Area Offices instead of the Central Office in Washington D.C. The School Board feels powerless in negotiations with the Albuquerque Area Office and believes the Bureau is intentionally keeping Indian communities in a cycle of powerlessness. They argue for self-determination and equitable rights in negotiating contracts for their schools. The Bureau is criticized for inequities in funding and oversight of contract schools compared to their own schools. The School Board is determined to run their own school for the next 100 years and calls for changes to legislation to support Indian control of education.
