The State Department of Education in Arizona is requesting $1.1 million from the federal government to help operate 15 public school districts on state Indian reservations. Without this funding, the districts may have to raise tax rates significantly. The Bureau of Indian Affairs has not allocated enough money for public school support in the past, leading to financial shortages in these districts. If Congress does not provide the additional funding, the schools may be forced to shut down. Officials are seeking emergency appropriations to address the funding shortfall.
