Per Capita Payments to the Five Civilized Tribes, 1963-09-20

 Item — Box: 44, Folder: 22
Identifier: CAC_CC_001_4_44_22_0008
Mrs. Louisa Wesley inquired about per capita payments to the Five Civilized Tribes, specifically the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma. The Bureau of Indian Affairs provided information stating that the Cherokee Nation received a $14,000,000 judgment in 1961, which is being paid out per capita. Other tribes such as the Choctaws, Chickasaws, Creeks, and Seminoles also received awards in the past, but there are no current plans for per capita distributions to these tribes. Mrs. Wesley was advised to contact the Muskogee Area Office if she believes she is eligible for a payment. Congressman Carl Albert promised to provide Mrs. Wesley with more information once he hears back from the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
