Eliminating Paternalism in Federal Relations with Indians, 1966-01-01 - 1966-12-31

The new Commissioner of Indian Affairs, Robert LaFollette Bennett, expressed his desire to eliminate paternalism in Federal relations with Indians. He suggested that Congress consider using groups other than the Bureau of Indian Affairs to determine if tribes are ready to be independent. Bennett emphasized the need for a partnership with Indian leadership and the elimination of laws restricting Indian development. However, his report lacked specific steps to address poverty and squalor on reservations, leading to criticism from the Senate Interior Committee. Bennett called for a genuine partnership with Indian leadership to move Indians into the mainstream of American life.
