Hans Walker, a Mandan Indian, has been appointed by Secretary of the Interior Rogers C. B. Morton to head the new Indian Water Rights Office. Walker, a graduate of the University of North Dakota's Law School, has experience in Federal Indian law and tribal government operations. The office will report directly to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs and will be responsible for protecting the water rights of American Indians. The office will be composed of five members and will focus on asserting and protecting water rights, establishing priorities and plans of action, developing technical data, and identifying water rights issues nationwide.
