Kiowa Land Claim Dispute: Millions of Acres at Stake, 1974-01-01 - 1974-12-31

 Item — Box: 36, Folder: 26
Identifier: CAC_CC_009_1_36_26_0005
A member of the Kiowa tribe has filed a land claim for millions of acres in six states in a fight with leaders of the Comanche, Kiowa, and Apache tribes. The claim includes oil shale lands in Colorado, tracts in the Black Hills of South Dakota, and other regions. The claim was filed under a provision that allows individual members to take action on behalf of the tribe. The claimant also filed a separate claim for $2.6 billion, alleging that tribe members have been deprived of their allotment rights since 1935. The claimant objects to a settlement endorsed by tribal members, claiming that adequate notice of the meeting was not given.
