Supporting Mutual Security Program: A Letter of Opposition, 1951-10-01

 Item — Box: 27, Folder: 43

Mrs. Raymond Feldman wrote a letter to George B. Schwabe urging him to support larger appropriations for the Mutual Security Program in order to stop the spread of Communism, particularly in the Middle East. She believes that helping these countries achieve a standard of living similar to the United States will create markets for American goods and foster better international relations. However, George B. Schwabe disagrees with this approach, stating that he believes most of the money spent on foreign aid has been wasted and that subsidizing socialist and communist governments only hastens their development in those directions. He also believes that following the course urged by Mrs. Feldman would bankrupt the United States financially and leave it vulnerable to Russian and communist aggression.
