The 1955 Act allows for the voluntary or involuntary removal of restrictions on Indian property if it is determined that the individual no longer needs protection. The Act allows for complete removal of restrictions on all property. Prior to the 1955 Act, restrictions could be removed on specific portions of property. If an application for removal is rejected, appeals can be made to higher authorities.
