The Department of the Interior announced that holders of coal leases and permits on Choctaw and Chickasaw Indian lands in Oklahoma will have preference in leasing deposits. The government purchased the lands for $8,500,000, fulfilling a promise made 50 years ago. Legislation is being considered to address rights of surface users. The lands will be administered by the Bureau of Land Management, and various issues regarding surface rights and leases need to be resolved.
