Mrs. Henry Melton wrote to Congressman George B. Schwabe inquiring about the delay in passing a bill for the prompt release of fathers from the military. She expressed her concerns about fathers being held in service while others with children are being discharged. Mrs. Melton shared her personal experience of her husband serving in World War I and her son currently stationed in Tokyo, leaving his daughter wondering why he can't come home. She urged for the bill to be passed as soon as Congress reconvenes and suggested sending dissatisfied strikers overseas as replacements. Congressman Schwabe responded, explaining his efforts to push for the bill's passage but facing opposition from military authorities and the New Deal crowd. He expressed disappointment in not being able to get the measure through the House and assured Mrs. Melton of his consistent attempts to obtain releases for fathers from the service.
