The Fourth Annual Conference of the American Indian Institute took place at the University of Oklahoma in 1960. The conference was attended by professionals and workshop leaders, but there was a lack of Indian leaders present. The Bureau of Indian Affairs discussed their objectives to improve opportunities for Indians through education and job training. A discussion on community social services highlighted the need for Indian families to utilize resources and for agencies to better understand and serve the Indian community. The importance of education and school attendance for Indian children was emphasized, along with the need for collaboration between Indian people and public school teachers. Additionally, the Johnson-O'Malley Act providing school lunches for indigent families in Indian communities was discussed.
