Mrs. Thomas A. Matthews wrote to James R. Jones, a member of Congress, urging that certain areas of the Salt Plains Refuge project be excluded from development in order to preserve gems and mineral deposits. Jones responded by informing Matthews that a study is underway by the Corps of Engineers to develop an alternative plan to preserve the mineral deposits. Jones expressed sympathy for Matthews' viewpoint and promised to work towards an equitable compromise on the project.
