Pat Hayes wrote to Senator Dewey Bartlett regarding irregularities at the Indian Alcohol Prevention Center in Anadarko, Oklahoma. After reviewing the materials, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) agreed that the allegations were serious and planned to send an evaluation team to investigate the program. Dr. Morris E. Chafetz, the Director of NIAAA, confirmed the visit and promised to provide a copy of the findings to Senator Bartlett. Hayes also requested assistance in seeking reinstatement and back pay from the organization.
