Correspondence on Social Security and Old Age Assistance between George B. Schwabe and Harvey G. Hays, 1946, 1946-07-12

Mr. Harvey G. Hays, a 74-year-old man from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, wrote a letter to George B. Schwabe, expressing his concerns about the Social Security Act and the lack of sufficient retirement benefits. Hays had been struggling to find permanent employment due to his age and had been receiving old age assistance until he found a job at Spartan Aircraft. Despite working for over five years, his retirement pension was not enough to cover his living expenses, and he was unable to qualify for Old Age Relief due to having saved some money. Hays questioned the handling of the accumulated funds for retirement benefits and expressed his worries about the future of the Social Security system. Schwabe responded by acknowledging Hays' concerns and discussing the flaws in the current system, expressing little hope for improvement under the current Congress.
