Correspondence between Oklahoma Congressman and Gas Company President on Controversial 1945 Bills, 1945-10-02

In a letter dated October 2, 1945, Joseph Bowes, President of Oklahoma Natural Gas Company, expressed concerns to Congressman George Schwabe about various bills related to full employment and government spending. Bowes believed that such bills would discourage work ethic and individual initiative. He also disagreed with Secretary of the Treasury Vinson's proposal to remove 12 million people from the federal tax rolls, arguing that all citizens should pay their fair share of taxes. Schwabe responded that he was already opposed to the full employment bill and the President's deferred work program, and had consistently voted against similar programs. He thanked Bowes for his input and asked for continued feedback on controversial issues.
