Overview of H.R. 8229: Land Transfer to the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Tribe, 1967-01-01 - 1974-12-31
H.R. 8229 proposes to transfer four tracts of Federal lands to the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Tribe of the Lake Traverse Reservation in South Dakota and North Dakota. These tracts were acquired for administrative purposes and are currently surplus to the needs of the government. The transfer would increase the tribal land base and allow the tribe to make better use of the lands. The bill also includes amendments to allow the government to use portions of the tracts for a limited time and for the Indian Claims Commission to determine the value of the title conveyed.
