H.R. 8230 is a bill that aims to grant the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux tribe the authority to buy and sell lands within their original reservation in order to consolidate tribal land holdings for more effective land use. The bill would allow the tribe to acquire, sell, exchange, or mortgage tribal lands with the approval of the Secretary of the Interior. The lands acquired would be taken in trust by the United States for the benefit of the tribe. The bill also includes amendments for technical clarifications recommended by the Department.
