The last full-blooded member of the Mandan Indian Tribe, Mrs. Mattie Grinnell, passed away at the age of 108. She lived a long and active life, participating in social movements, tending her garden, and praying for peace. Despite limited formal education, she held onto her Indian heritage and traditions. Mrs. Grinnell had a large family and was the last person to receive a Civil War Widow's pension. She was described as noble, regal, and accepting of the burdens faced by her people.
